The Children of Abraham
31 ○To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33 ○They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants2) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34 ○Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father.3) "
39 ○"Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would4) do the things Abraham did.
40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself."

진리가 너희를 자유하게 한다
31 ○예수께서 자기를 믿은 유대 사람들에게 말씀하셨다. "너희가 나의 말에 머무르면, 참으로 나의 제자가 되고,
32 진리를 알게 될 것이요, 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다."
33 그들은 예수께 말하였다. "우리는 아브라함의 자손이라 아무에게도 종노릇한 일이 없는데, 당신은 어찌하여 우리가 자유롭게 될 것이라고 말합니까?"
34 ○예수께서 대답하셨다. "내가 진정으로 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 죄를 짓는 사람은 다 죄의 종이다.
35 종은 언제까지나 집에 머물러 있지 못하지만, 아들은 언제까지나 머물러 있다.
36 그러므로 아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면, 너희는 참으로 자유롭게 될 것이다.
37 나는 너희가 아브라함의 자손임을 안다. 그런데 너희는 나를 죽이려고 한다. 내 말이 너희 속에 있을 자리가 없기 때문이다.
38 나는 나의 아버지 앞에서 본 것을 말하고, 너희는 너희의 아버지에게서 들은 것을 행한다."
 
너희의 아버지는 악마다
39 ○그들이 예수께 말하였다. "우리 조상은 아브라함이오." 예수께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. "너희가 아브라함의 자손이라면, 아브라함이 한 대로 6)하였을 것이다.
40 그러나 지금 너희는 하나님에게서 들은 진리를 너희에게 말해 준 사람인 나를 죽이려고 한다. 아브라함은 이런 일을 하지 않았다.
41 너희는 너희의 아버지가 한 일을 하고 있다." 그들이 예수께 말하였다. "우리는 음란한 데서 나지 않았고, 우리에게는 하나님이신 아버지만 한 분 계십니다."
